An in-depth explanation of Tawheed as the right of Allah upon His slaves, the foundation of salvation, and the methodology of the Prophets in calling to pure worship.
In the name of Allah, the Most Merciful, the Especially Merciful.
All praise is due to Allah, we praise Him, seek His aid, and ask for His forgiveness. We seek refuge in Allah from the evils of our own souls and from our wicked deeds. Whomever Allah guides, none can misguide, and whomever He leaves astray, none can guide. I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship in truth except Allah alone, without partner, and I bear witness that Muhammad ﷺ is His slave and Messenger.
Imam Ibn Kathir (رحمة الله علي) mentions in his Tafsir that the intent of this verse is that Allah created the creation to worship Him alone, without partners. As Abdullah Ibn Abbas (رضي الله عنه) stated:
The essence of this worship is encapsulated in the statement: La ilaha illallah. It is imperative to understand that this does not merely mean "There is no creator but Allah," for even the polytheists of Quraysh believed that Allah was the Creator and Sustainer. Rather, the correct meaning, as clarified by the scholars of the Salaf, is: "There is no deity worthy of worship in truth except Allah."
When we examine the methodology (Manhaj) of the Prophets, we find a unified strategy. They did not begin by addressing political corruption, economic disparity, or social ills. They struck at the root.
Allah says:
This priority was maintained by the Final Messenger ﷺ. When he sent Mu’adh ibn Jabal (رضي الله عنه) to Yemen, he laid down the methodology of Dawah for all generations:
Sheikh Al-Albani (رحمة الله عليه) commented on this, noting that rectifying the beliefs (Aqeedah) is the starting point for any true reform. One cannot build a sound structure on a corrupt foundation.
The human heart was created with a void that nothing can fill except the worship of its Creator. Anxiety, depression, and confusion often stem from the heart's attachment to the creation rather than the Creator.
Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمة الله عليه) wrote:
The believer must realize that sincerity (Ikhlas) is a condition for the acceptance of deeds. Prayer, fasting, and charity—no matter how numerous—are scattered like dust if the foundation is cracked by Shirk (associating partners with Allah).
Allah gives a terrifying warning to the Best of Creation Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and by extension to us:
This includes Major Shirk (calling upon the dead, seeking aid from other than Allah in what only Allah can do) and Minor Shirk (showing off in worship, or Riya).
Sheikh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymeen (رحمة الله عليه) noted:
Therefore, the path to revival begins with the rectification of our creed. As Imam Al-Barbahari (رحمة الله عليه) famously stated:
We ask Allah to keep us firm upon the Tawheed that He loves, to protect us from the darkness of Shirk and Bid'ah, and to make our last words in this life La ilaha illallah.
