The Israeli military has drastically intensified its offensive operations across the occupied West Bank, launching aggressive raids into Palestinian neighborhoods, blocking essential roadways, and conducting mass arrests. However, this military escalation is only one facet of a much broader and more destructive campaign. Under the direct protection of the armed forces, extremist Israeli settlers have unleashed a wave of terror, torching properties and places of worship in a systematic effort to drive Palestinians from their land.
This relentless assault has effectively normalized a "scorched earth" policy, functioning as an active campaign of ethnic cleansing against the Palestinian population.
Unprecedented Arrests and Village Incursions
The scale of the military raids has reached staggering levels. In recent days, heavily armed Israeli forces stormed homes in Tulkarem and Nablus, detaining dozens of Palestinians. This brings the total number of Palestinians taken into Israeli custody this month to an alarming 24,000.
In the village of Tell, the situation devolved into extreme violence. Following an incident where four Palestinians and two Israelis were killed, Israeli forces fired tear gas directly at civilians, journalists, and medics. Paramedics at the scene reported treating numerous cases of severe tear gas suffocation as soldiers shielded settlers who were attacking the village. According to local witnesses, roughly eight Palestinian houses and multiple vehicles were deliberately set on fire by settlers.
Scorched Earth and the Targeting of Mosques
The violence has specifically targeted Palestinian cultural, economic, and religious lifelines. In a brazen display of impunity, settler militias set fire to two separate mosques overnight. Footage from the village of Qusra, south of Nablus, showed a mosque engulfed in flames, its walls defaced with anti-Palestinian graffiti. A second mosque was torched in the village of Kur, south of Tulkarem.
Economic terrorism is also being utilized to cripple the Palestinian population. In one instance, an arson attack on a local stone quarry resulted in an estimated $700,000 in damages, devastating the livelihoods of the owners and workers. Military checkpoints and locked gates have completely paralyzed movement, leaving civilians trapped and unable to flee the violence or seek medical aid.
State-Backed Ethnic Cleansing
What makes this current wave of violence distinct is the undeniable backing it receives from the highest levels of the Israeli government. This is not isolated vigilantism; it is state-sponsored ethnic cleansing. The right-wing settler movement is deeply embedded within the Israeli cabinet.
Far-right ministers, who themselves live in illegal settlements, are actively fanning the flames. Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who holds sweeping powers over the occupied West Bank, recently announced plans to triple the size of the illegal Eli settlement. In just a matter of days, five new illegal outposts have been established. According to military radio, settler violence has surged by 63% over the past year, fully supported and encouraged by government officials seeking to annex the territory entirely.
The Threat to Masjid Al-Aqsa and Extremist Ideology
The systematic destruction of mosques in the West Bank is inextricably linked to the broader, dangerous ideology driving these extremist groups: the erasure of Islamic and Palestinian heritage to establish absolute dominance.
A central, publicly stated goal of these settler movements—and the far-right ministers who lead them—is the complete takeover of the Al-Aqsa Mosque compound in occupied East Jerusalem. Extremist factions are actively pushing to destroy the historic Islamic holy site in order to build a "Third Temple" in its place. Recent incursions into the compound by thousands of ultranationalists, protected by police and led by government officials, have featured provocative rituals and declarations of this intent.
The immediate violence in the West Bank, the burning of local mosques, and the overarching threat to demolish Al-Aqsa are not separate issues. They are interconnected pillars of a relentless campaign of ethnic cleansing and erasure, designed to force Palestinians out of their ancestral homes while the international community looks away.
