Pilgrims observe the Day of Arafah in 40°C heat, completing the most critical pillar of Hajj while honoring the Prophet's final sermon.
Mecca, Saudi Arabia — May 26, 2026
Millions of white-clad pilgrims have converged on the vast plains of Mount Arafat, marking the spiritual climax of the 2026 Hajj season. The Day of Arafah is universally recognized as the most significant day of the pilgrimage; it is so central to the rites that any pilgrim who misses this day will have their entire Hajj voided.
The plains of Arafat hold a profound place in Islamic history. During the 10th year of his migration to Medina, over 1,400 years ago, Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stood on the Mount of Arafat and delivered his monumental final message to the Muslims.
In this farewell address, he laid down the groundwork for both private and public behavior. The sermon established critical societal rules, detailing the proper treatment of women and the do's and don'ts of how Muslims must relate to one another. It was also during this solemn gathering that the divine revelation confirming the perfection of the Islamic religion was sent down to the Prophet ﷺ.
This year, the physical dedication of the worshippers is being heavily tested. Pilgrims are enduring intense weather conditions, with daytime temperatures topping 40 degrees Celsius. Despite the extreme heat and the rigorous demands of the Hajj rites, the crowds remain steadfast, driven by the desire to fulfill one of the most important pillars of Islam.
Umbrellas dot the landscape as far as the eye can see, providing meager shade as the faithful spend the daylight hours in deep supplication, seeking forgiveness and mercy.
While the focus remains overwhelmingly spiritual, geopolitical realities continue to cast a shadow for some. For hundreds of thousands of pilgrims arriving from neighboring Gulf countries, questions and concerns remain regarding ongoing regional situations. Many are quietly monitoring whether these tensions will escalate in a way that could impede their safe return home once the pilgrimage concludes.
As the sun sets on Arafat, the millions gathered will begin their calm progression toward Muzdalifah to spend the night, carrying with them the prayers of an entire global Ummah.
