Understand the Islamic ruling on using deodorant during Ihram. Learn about the prohibition of scented products and the rules for forgetfulness.
Praise be to Allah, and blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, and his companions.
One of the fundamental restrictions placed upon a pilgrim in the state of Ihram is the absolute prohibition of applying perfume (Teeb) to the body or clothing. Imam Ibn Qudamah (رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ) stated:
This consensus is firmly established in the authentic Sunnah. Ibn 'Abbas (رَضِيَ ٱللَّٰهُ عَنْهُ) narrated the incident of a man whose camel threw him and broke his neck while he was standing with Prophet Muhammad ﷺ in a state of Ihram. Prophet Muhammad ﷺ commanded the companions:
Wash him with water and lote leaves, and shroud him in his two garments, but do not put any perfume on him or cover his head, for Allah will raise him on the Day of Resurrection reciting the Talbiyah.Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih MuslimThe Ruling on Modern Deodorants
Based on this clear prohibition, it is impermissible for a Muhrim (a pilgrim in Ihram) to use any scented deodorant, antiperspirant, body spray, or scented soap. These items are manufactured with fragrances and fall directly under the ruling of perfume.
If a pilgrim needs to manage body odor during the pilgrimage, they must seek out strictly unscented deodorants or medical antiperspirants that contain no added fragrance. Maintaining basic hygiene with water and unscented products is entirely permissible.
The Shari'ah is built upon profound mercy and ease. If a pilgrim applies a scented deodorant out of forgetfulness, or because they were genuinely ignorant of the ruling (e.g., they did not know the deodorant was scented, or they did not know scented items were forbidden in Ihram), they do not incur any sin, and they do not have to offer any expiation (Fidyah).
Allah the Exalted says:
Our Lord! Punish us not if we forget or fall into error.Quran, Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:286
However, the moment the pilgrim remembers or is informed of the ruling, they must immediately wash off the scented product with water.
And Allah the Exalted knows best.
