Learn the Islamic ruling on touching and reciting the Quran without wudu, based on authentic Hadith and the view of the Salaf scholars.

It is not permissible for a Muslim to touch the Quran without wudu according to the majority of scholars. This is the view of the four Imams, and it was also expressed in the fatwas of the Companions of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ.
Evidence from Hadith on Touching the Quran
A sahih hadith narrated from ‘Amr ibn Hazm (رضي الله عنه) states:
“The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ wrote to the people of Yemen: ‘No one should touch the Quran except one who is tahir (pure).’”

This indicates that it is not permissible to touch the Mus-haf directly without being in a state of purity. Moving the Quran with a barrier, such as a wrapper, is allowed.
Reciting the Quran without Wudu
A person may recite the Quran from memory without wudu, or read it if someone else holds the Mus-haf and prompts him. However, one who is junub (in a state of major impurity) should not recite from the Mus-haf or memory until ghusl is performed.
It was narrated from Ali (رضي الله عنه) that:
“The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ came out from the toilet and recited something from the Quran. He said: ‘This is for the one who is not junub; but the one who is junub should not do this, not even one ayah.’”

Understanding Purity of the Believer
Abu Hurayrah (رضي الله عنه) reported:
“I was junub and met the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. Later, after performing ghusl, I returned. He said: ‘Subhan-Allah, O Abu Hurayrah! The believer does not become impure.’”

Imam Al-Nawawi (رحمه الله) commented:
“This hadith illustrates that the Muslim is tahir whether alive or dead. Sweat, saliva, tears, and body remain pure even when without wudu, in janabah, menstruating, or postnatal bleeding.”

Conclusion
In summary, touching the Mus-haf without wudu is not permissible according to the majority of scholars. Reciting the Quran from memory is allowed without wudu, but one in janabah must perform ghusl first. Minor impurity does not prevent the recitation of Quran, and the believer remains essentially pure.
