Learn whether using an asthma inhaler, oxygen, nebulizer, or powdered inhaler breaks the fast during Ramadan according to the Qur'an, authentic Sunnah, and the scholars of Ahlus-Sunnah.
All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad ﷺ is His slave and Messenger.
Many Muslims who suffer from asthma or other breathing conditions wonder whether using an inhaler during Ramadan invalidates the fast. The ruling depends on the type of medication being used. Some asthma treatments do not break the fast, while others do.
Types of Asthma Medication
The most common asthma treatments include:
- Asthma puffers (metered-dose inhalers)
- Oxygen therapy
- Medicated vaporizers (nebulizers)
- Powdered inhaler capsules
Each has its own ruling regarding fasting.
Does Using an Asthma Inhaler Break the Fast?
No. According to the strongest opinion of many contemporary scholars, using a standard asthma puffer does not break the fast.
An asthma inhaler delivers compressed medication directly to the lungs through the airways. It is neither food nor drink, nor does it resemble them. Therefore, using it does not invalidate the fast.
This is the view of the scholars of the Standing Committee for Fatwa, Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymin (رحمه الله), and many contemporary scholars.
Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymin (رحمه الله) said:
"The gas inhaler contains nothing but air which opens the airways so that the person can breathe easily. This does not break the fast, and the fasting person may use it while his fast remains valid."
Majmu' Fatawa wa Rasail Ibn 'Uthaymin, 19/Question 159
Does Using Oxygen Break the Fast?
Using oxygen does not break the fast because oxygen is not food, drink, or nourishment. It simply assists breathing and does not provide nutrition to the body.
Therefore, a fasting person may use oxygen therapy whenever needed, and the fast remains valid.
Do Nebulizers (Vaporizers) Break the Fast?
Yes. Medicated vaporizers (nebulizers) generally invalidate the fast.
A nebulizer converts liquid medicine into a fine mist that is inhaled through a mask or mouthpiece. Inevitably, some of the liquid medication and dissolved substances reach the stomach through the mouth and throat.
Because of this, the scholars ruled that using a medicated nebulizer breaks the fast. If it is medically necessary, the person should use it, break the fast, and make up that day after Ramadan.
Do Powdered Inhaler Capsules Break the Fast?
Yes. Powdered inhaler capsules invalidate the fast.
These devices contain medicine in powder form. During inhalation, part of the powder mixes with saliva and reaches the stomach. Since a substance enters the stomach intentionally through the mouth, the fast is broken.
Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymin (رحمه الله) said:
"Capsules break the fast because they contain powder that has substance and some of it reaches the stomach. If a person must use them, he should break his fast and make up that day later."
Majmu' Fatawa wa Rasail Ibn 'Uthaymin, 19/Question 159
What If the Medication Is Medically Necessary?
If a person's condition requires medication that invalidates the fast, then preserving life and health takes priority.
Allah ﷻ says:
"...And whoever is ill or on a journey, then an equal number of other days."
Qur'an, Surah Al-Baqarah 2:185
Therefore:
- If the illness is temporary, the person should use the required medication, break the fast if necessary, and make up the missed day after Ramadan.
- If the illness is permanent and there is no hope of recovery, and fasting is no longer possible, then the person should feed one poor person for each missed day, according to the rulings of Islamic law.
Summary of the Ruling
- Asthma puffer (metered-dose inhaler): Does not break the fast.
- Oxygen therapy: Does not break the fast.
- Medicated nebulizer (vaporizer): Breaks the fast.
- Powder inhaler capsules: Break the fast.
If a fasting person genuinely needs medication that invalidates the fast, there is no sin upon him for using it. He should follow the ruling appropriate to his condition by making up the fast later or, if permanently unable to fast, feeding a poor person for each missed day.
And Allah knows best.
