How Long Does Hajj Take? (Timeline & Number of Days)

Discover exactly how long the Hajj pilgrimage takes. A complete breakdown of the 5 to 6 days of Hajj rituals from the 8th to the 13th of Dhul-Hijjah.

Praise be to Allah, and blessings and peace be upon the Messenger of Allah, his family, and his companions.

A common question among those preparing for the sacred journey is regarding its exact duration. While pilgrims may stay in Makkah for several weeks before or after the pilgrimage, the actual, prescribed rites of Hajj are confined to a very specific set of days.

Allah the Exalted states in the Quran:

And remember Allah during [specific] numbered days. Then whoever hastens [his departure] in two days - there is no sin upon him; and whoever delays [it] - there is no sin upon him - for him who fears Allah.
Quran, Surah Al-Baqarah, 2:203

According to the authentic Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, the actual timeline of Hajj spans 5 to 6 days:

Day 1: The 8th of Dhul-Hijjah (Day of Tarwiyah)

This is the official start of Hajj. The pilgrim enters the state of Ihram from their residence and travels to the tent city of Mina. They spend the day and night there, performing the five daily prayers (shortened but not combined), preparing themselves spiritually for the days ahead.

Day 2: The 9th of Dhul-Hijjah (Day of 'Arafah)

This is the most critical day, as Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

Hajj is 'Arafah.
Sunan al-Tirmidhi

After sunrise, pilgrims move to the plains of 'Arafat to spend the day in intense supplication until sunset. Immediately after sunset, they travel to Muzdalifah to spend the night.

Day 3: The 10th of Dhul-Hijjah (Day of Sacrifice / Eid al-Adha)

This is the busiest day of Hajj. Pilgrims return to Mina to stone the largest pillar (Jamrat al-'Aqabah), slaughter their sacrificial animal, and shave or trim their hair. They also travel to Makkah to perform Tawaf al-Ifadah and the Sa'i of Hajj, then return to Mina.

Day 4: The 11th of Dhul-Hijjah (First Day of Tashreeq)

The pilgrim stays in Mina. The primary obligatory ritual on this day is stoning all three pillars (the small, middle, and large) after the sun has passed its zenith (midday).

Day 5: The 12th of Dhul-Hijjah (Second Day of Tashreeq)

The pilgrim repeats the stoning of the three pillars after midday.

  • Hastening (5-Day Hajj): At this point, the Quranic verse (2:203) applies. If a pilgrim wishes to conclude their Hajj, they may "hasten" and leave Mina on this day. However, they must depart Mina before the sun sets. If they do this, their Hajj rituals took 5 days.

Day 6: The 13th of Dhul-Hijjah (Third Day of Tashreeq)

  • Delaying (6-Day Hajj): If the pilgrim chooses to stay (which Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymeen (رَحِمَهُ ٱللَّٰهُ) notes is superior and closer to the exact practice of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ), they spend the night of the 13th in Mina and stone the three pillars one final time after midday. This brings the total duration to 6 days.

Conclusion of the Journey Regardless of whether a pilgrim completes Hajj in 5 or 6 days, the absolute final act before departing the city of Makkah for their home country must be the Farewell Circumambulation (Tawaf al-Wida').

And Allah the Exalted knows best.
