Learn the nine conditions required for a valid Salah according to the Qur'an, authentic Sunnah, and the understanding of the scholars of Ahlus-Sunnah.
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is His slave and Messenger.
“Condition” in the terminology of usul al-fiqh (principles of jurisprudence) means that which is essential and without which a thing is not valid. So the conditions of prayer being valid refer to that on which the validity of prayer depends, such that if one of these conditions is broken, then prayer is not valid as a result.
Conditions of the validity of prayer:
1. The beginning of prayer time
This is the most important condition. A prayer offered before its time has begun is not valid, according to scholarly consensus, because Allah says:
“Verily, As-Salah (the prayer) is enjoined on the believers at fixed hours.”
Quran, Surah An-Nisa 4:103
Allah also mentions the recitation in the early dawn and the general timing of prayers:
“Perform As-Salah (Iqamat-as-Salah) from mid-day till the darkness of the night, and recite the Quran in the early dawn. Verily, the recitation of the Quran in the early dawn is ever witnessed.”
Quran, Surah Al-Isra 17:78
2. Covering the ‘awrah
If a person prays with his ‘awrah uncovered, his prayer is not valid:
“O Children of Adam! Take your adornment (by wearing your clean clothes) while praying.”
Quran, Surah Al-A'raf 7:31
The scholars define ‘awrah as:
- Minimum: male child 7–10, private parts only.
- Moderate: age 10+, from navel to knee.
- Maximum: adult free woman, all body except hands and face (feet differ according to scholars).
3. Taharah (purity)
- Purity from ritual impurity (hadath): prayer is invalid without wudu or ghusl when required.
- Purity from tangible impurity (najasah): if aware of impurity on body, clothes, or prayer place, prayer is invalid.
Examples:
- Body: avoid any impurity.
- Clothing: wash off menstrual blood or other najasah before prayer.
- Place: ensure prayer place is clean from urine or other impurities.
4. Facing towards the qiblah
Prayer must be performed facing the qiblah:
“...so turn your face in the direction of Al-Masjid Al-Haram (at Makkah). And wheresoever you people are, turn your faces (in prayer) in that direction.”
Quran, Surah Al-Baqarah 2:144
5. Intention (niyyah)
Prayer without intention is invalid:
“Actions are but by intentions and each person will have but that which he intended.”
Sahih Bukhari, 1:1; Hadith of Umar ibn al-Khattab
6. Being Muslim
Only a Muslim’s prayer is valid.
7. Being of sound mind
A person must be sane; insanity invalidates prayer.
8. Discernment (baligh)
Prayer is obligatory only after reaching the age of discernment.
9. Removal of tangible impurity
Ensuring cleanliness of body, clothes, and prayer place as above.
Based on this, the conditions of prayer being valid are nine in all: being Muslim, being of sound mind, discernment, being free of ritual impurity, removal of tangible impurity, covering the ‘awrah, the time for that prayer should have begun, facing the qiblah, and forming the right intention.
And Allah knows best.
