Can Humans Marry Jinn in Islam?

All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is His slave and Messenger.

The issue of marriage between humans and jinn has been discussed by scholars throughout Islamic history. While some scholars mentioned the theoretical possibility of such a union occurring, the majority of scholars held that such marriages are not permissible and that there is no authentic evidence from the Qur'an or Sunnah encouraging or legislating them.

Marriage in Islam Is Established Between Human Beings

“And Allah has made for you from yourselves mates and has made for you from your mates sons and grandchildren and has provided for you from the good things.”

Qur'an, Surah An-Nahl 16:72

“And among His Signs is this, that He created for you wives from among yourselves, that you may find tranquility in them, and He placed between you affection and mercy.”

Qur'an, Surah Ar-Rum 30:21

The scholars of Tafsir explained that the phrase "from yourselves" means from your own kind, species, and nature. Allah created human spouses for human beings so that the objectives of marriage, companionship, affection, mercy, and family life may be fulfilled.

Imam As-Suyuti (رحمه الله) said:

“If one says: What is your opinion concerning marriage between a human and a jinn? I say: I believe it is unlawful.”

He further mentioned that Al-Hasan al-Basri, Qatadah, Al-Hakam, Sufyan ibn 'Uyaynah, and Ishaq ibn Rahawayh prohibited such marriages.

No Authentic Evidence Permits Marriage Between Humans and Jinn

There is no authentic hadith in which Prophet Muhammad ﷺ approved, practiced, or legislated marriage between humans and jinn.

Many stories circulated among later writers regarding such marriages, but the scholars of Hadith have not established any authentic narration proving the permissibility of such unions.

Because acts of worship, marriage contracts, and legal rulings require evidence from the Qur'an and authentic Sunnah, the absence of any authentic proof is itself a strong indication against considering such marriages permissible.

Statements of the Scholars

Imam Malik (رحمه الله) was asked about marriage between humans and jinn. He disliked it and feared the corruption that would result from it.

He mentioned that a woman might become pregnant and then claim that her husband was a jinn, leading to widespread corruption and confusion.

Reported by scholars of Maliki Fiqh

Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) said:

“Marriage between humans and jinn may occur, and offspring may result from it. This is something well known and reported. However, it is disliked by the scholars.”

Although Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) acknowledged reports of such occurrences, he did not cite any evidence from the Qur'an or Sunnah establishing it as a lawful or recommended form of marriage.

Shaykh Ibn Baz (رحمه الله) stated that there is no reliable evidence supporting marriage between humans and jinn, and a Muslim should avoid becoming occupied with such matters.

Shaykh Ibn 'Uthaymin (رحمه الله) explained that even if such cases were theoretically possible, marriage legislation in Islam is directed toward human beings marrying other human beings, and such claims should not be accepted without clear proof.

Practical Problems With Such Claims

The scholars who prohibited such marriages also mentioned many harmful consequences, including:

Inability to verify the identity of the alleged spouse.
Confusion regarding lineage and inheritance.
Possibility of deception and false claims.
Violation of the normal objectives of Islamic marriage.
Opening the door to superstition, fraud, and exploitation.

For these reasons, many scholars considered such marriages either prohibited or strongly discouraged.

The majority of scholars considered marriage between humans and jinn impermissible.
