All perfect praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad ﷺ is His slave and Messenger.
Wudu (ablution) is a condition for the validity of Salah. It is the purification that a Muslim performs before standing in prayer, and Allah has clearly commanded it in the Qur’an.
“O you who believe! When you rise to pray, wash your faces and your hands up to the elbows, and wipe over your heads, and wash your feet up to the ankles…”
Qur’an, Surah Al-Ma’idah 5:6
How to perform Wudu step by step
The obligation of Wudu consists of four main actions that must be done in order and without long interruption between them.
1. Washing the face
Wash the entire face once, from the hairline to the chin and from ear to ear. This also includes rinsing the mouth and nose.
2. Washing the arms
Wash both arms up to and including the elbows once, starting with the right arm.
3. Wiping the head
Wipe the entire head once, including the ears.
4. Washing the feet
Wash both feet up to and including the ankles once, making sure water reaches between the toes.
Sunnah actions of Wudu (recommended)
In addition to the obligatory steps, the Prophet ﷺ taught several Sunnah actions that beautify Wudu:
- Saying Bismillah
- Washing hands before starting
- Rinsing mouth and nose
- Washing each limb three times
- Making intention in the heart
Evidence from the Sunnah
‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan (رضي الله عنه) described the Wudu of the Prophet ﷺ, showing washing of limbs three times and wiping the head once.
Sahih Muslim (Hadith on purification)
Conditions of valid Wudu
For Wudu to be valid, a person must be:
- Muslim
- Of sound mind
- Having intention of purification
- Using pure water
- Ensuring water reaches the skin (removing barriers like paint or nail polish)
After completing Wudu
It is recommended to say the shahadah after finishing Wudu:
أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللهُ وَحْدَهُ لَا شَرِيكَ لَهُ وَأَشْهَدُ أَنَّ مُحَمَّدًا عَبْدُهُ وَرَسُولُهُ
Ashhadu an la ilaha illallah wahdahu la sharika lah, wa ashhadu anna Muhammadan ‘abduhu wa rasuluh
Conclusion
Wudu is simple and consists of four essential acts: washing the face, washing the arms, wiping the head, and washing the feet in order. A Muslim should perform it carefully before every Salah, following the Sunnah of the Prophet ﷺ.
And Allah knows best.
