Learn the meaning of Tawheed in Islam, its three categories—Rububiyyah, Uluhiyyah, and Asma wa Sifat—with Qur’an and authentic Sunnah evidences.
All perfect praise be to Allah, Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is His slave and Messenger.
Tawheed is the most fundamental principle of Islam. It is the foundation upon which the entire religion is built, and the purpose for which Allah created mankind and sent all the Messengers.
Without Tawheed, no deed is accepted, and no act of worship has value. It is the essence of the testimony of faith: “La ilaha illa Allah” (There is no god worthy of worship except Allah).
What is Tawheed?
Linguistically, Tawheed means to make something one, unique, or singular. In Arabic usage, it means affirming oneness and denying any partner or equal.
In Islamic terminology, Tawheed means believing that Allah is One and Unique in His Essence, His actions, and His attributes, with no partner, rival, or equal in any form.
This belief is clearly established in the Qur’an:
“Say: He is Allah, One (Ahad). Allah, the Self-Sufficient. He neither begets nor is born. And there is none comparable to Him.”
Qur’an, Surah Al-Ikhlas 112:1-4
The importance of Tawheed in Islam
Tawheed is not just a belief among other beliefs. It is the core message of every Prophet sent by Allah. Every Messenger began his دعوت with the call:
“O my people, worship Allah; you have no other deity besides Him.”
Meaning repeated in Qur’an, e.g. Surah Al-A’raf 7:59
Allah says:
“And We sent not before you any messenger except that We revealed to him: There is no deity worthy of worship except Me, so worship Me.”
Qur’an, Surah Al-Anbiya 21:25
Categories of Tawheed
The scholars of Ahl al-‘Ilm have explained that Tawheed is divided into three main categories, based on the Qur’an and Sunnah:
- Tawheed al-Rububiyyah (Oneness of Lordship)
- Tawheed al-Uluhiyyah (Oneness of Worship)
- Tawheed al-Asma wa’l-Sifat (Oneness of Names and Attributes)
1. Tawheed al-Rububiyyah (Oneness of Lordship)
This is the belief that Allah alone is the Creator, Sustainer, Controller of the universe, and the One who gives life and causes death. No one shares with Him in His actions of Lordship.
Even the disbelievers of Makkah acknowledged this aspect of Tawheed, as Allah mentions:
“If you ask them who created the heavens and the earth, they will surely say: Allah.”
Qur’an, Surah Luqman 31:25
However, this acknowledgment alone did not make them Muslims, because they did not worship Allah alone.
2. Tawheed al-Uluhiyyah (Oneness of Worship)
This is the most important category of Tawheed. It means directing all acts of worship—such as prayer, supplication, sacrifice, and reliance—only to Allah.
“And your Lord has decreed that you worship none but Him.”
Qur’an, Surah Al-Isra 17:23
“So worship Allah and do not associate anything with Him.”
Qur’an, Surah An-Nisa 4:36
This is the essence of “La ilaha illa Allah”, and it is the purpose for which the heavens and the earth were created. Whoever directs any act of worship to other than Allah has violated this principle of Tawheed.
3. Tawheed al-Asma wa’l-Sifat (Oneness of Names and Attributes)
This means affirming the beautiful names and perfect attributes that Allah has affirmed for Himself in the Qur’an and Sunnah, without distortion, denial, or likening Him to His creation.
“There is nothing like unto Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.”
Qur’an, Surah Ash-Shura 42:11
Allah is unique in His names and attributes. We affirm what He affirmed for Himself while believing that His perfection has no resemblance to creation.
The connection between Tawheed and Islam
Tawheed is not separate from Islam; rather, it is Islam itself in its essence. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ called people to Tawheed first before any other obligation.
When the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ sent Mu’adh ibn Jabal to Yemen, he said:
“Let the first thing you call them to be the Tawheed of Allah.”
Sahih al-Bukhari, 7372; Sahih Muslim, 19
This shows that correct belief in Tawheed is the foundation before all other acts of worship.
Why Tawheed is essential
Tawheed is essential because:
- It is the purpose of creation
- It is the message of all Prophets
- Without it, deeds are rejected
- It is the first right of Allah upon His servants
The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“The right of Allah upon His servants is that they worship Him and do not associate anything with Him.”
Sahih al-Bukhari, 2856; Sahih Muslim, 30
Conclusion
Tawheed is the foundation of Islam and the key to success in this life and the Hereafter. It is the belief that Allah alone deserves all worship, has no partner in His Lordship, and is perfect in His names and attributes.
Every Muslim must learn Tawheed, live by it, and protect it from anything that contradicts it.
And Allah knows best.
