Learn what happens after death in the grave according to Qur'an, authentic Hadith, and the belief of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah including questioning, punishment, and blessings of al-Barzakh.
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ is His slave and Messenger.
Belief in what happens after death is part of the core creed of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah. After a person dies, he enters a stage called Al-Barzakh, which is a barrier between this worldly life and the Day of Resurrection.
Allah ﷻ says:
“Behind them is a barrier (barzakh) until the Day they are resurrected.”
Qur'an, Surah Al-Mu’minun 23:100
1. Do the dead hear the living?
The general principle in the Qur'an is that the dead do not hear the speech of the living in a normal way that can benefit them or respond to them.
“Indeed, you cannot make the dead hear.”
Qur'an, Surah An-Naml 27:80
“So verily, you cannot make the dead to hear.”
Qur'an, Surah Ar-Rum 30:52
However, there are specific, limited cases mentioned in the Sunnah (such as the people of Badr) which are exceptions by Allah’s will and do not establish a general rule.
2. Questioning in the grave
After burial, the deceased is questioned by two angels known as Munkar and Nakir. He is asked about his Lord, his religion, and his Prophet ﷺ. The believer will be firm, while the disbeliever will be confused and punished.
Al-Bara’ ibn ‘Azib (رضي الله عنه) narrated that the Prophet ﷺ said about the believer in the grave:
“When the believing servant is about to depart from this world… two angels come to him and ask him: Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your Prophet?”
Sunan Abu Dawud, 4753; Musnad Ahmad, 18534 (authentic)
3. Punishment and blessing in the grave
The belief of Ahlus-Sunnah wal-Jama'ah is that the grave is either a garden from the gardens of Paradise or a pit from the pits of Hell, depending on one’s deeds.
Allah ﷻ mentions the punishment of Pharaoh’s people in the intermediate life:
“The Fire, they are exposed to it morning and afternoon. And on the Day the Hour is established: ‘Make the people of Pharaoh enter the severest punishment.’”
Qur'an, Surah Ghafir 40:46
This verse is one of the clearest evidences for the punishment of the grave (barzakh punishment), as explained by the scholars of Tafsir such as Ibn Kathir.
The Prophet ﷺ used to seek refuge from the punishment of the grave in every prayer, saying:
“O Allah, I seek refuge in You from the punishment of the grave…”
Sahih al-Bukhari, 798; Sahih Muslim, 589 (Book of Prayer)
4. Is the punishment in the grave real?
Yes. The scholars of Ahlus-Sunnah are agreed that the punishment and reward in the grave are real and must be believed in. It is part of the unseen (ghayb) that Allah has informed us about.
Ibn Taymiyyah (رحمه الله) said:
“The view of the early generations of this Ummah and its Imams is that the punishment and blessing of the grave happen to both the soul and the body…”
Al-Ikhtiyarat Al-Fiqhiyyah, p. 94
Similarly, Ibn al-Qayyim (رحمه الله) affirmed that the soul is either in bliss or punishment in al-Barzakh, sometimes connected to the body in a manner known only to Allah.
5. Relationship between soul and body in the grave
The correct belief is that both the soul and body are affected. The soul experiences reward or punishment, and the body is also affected in a manner that befits the unseen world, even if we do not perceive it.
The scholars compared this to sleep, where a person may experience pain or pleasure in a dream while the people around him feel nothing.
6. Conclusion
After death, every human enters the life of al-Barzakh. He is questioned in his grave, and he will either experience comfort and bliss or punishment and distress according to his deeds. This is part of the unseen that must be believed in as it has been authentically reported from the Qur'an and Sunnah.
The believer should prepare for this stage by strengthening Tawheed, performing righteous deeds, and seeking refuge from the punishment of the grave.
And Allah knows best.
